Could Dental Implants Become Even More Predictable?

dental implants pflugerville | dental implants marble falls

Dental implants are one of the most popular choices for tooth replacement today, and with good reason. Implants consist of a titanium post that is implanted into the jawbone and then topped with a full dental crown. This choice results in a durable, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable tooth replacement. Because they perform so much better than more traditional options, like dentures, implants are highly recommended for many patients.

Problems with Dental Implants

However, even though most patients have a great experience with their dental implant procedure, there are still complications that can arise in 5-10% of patients. Your implant may not attach properly to the bone, or an infection can develop, which causes biofilm to form on the implant, and your body will then reject the implant. This is one of the most common issues that can occur today.

A recent study, however, has determined a method that could nearly eliminate any chance of these issues from occurring, creating a far more successful procedure entirely. The School of Biological Sciences, Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Engineering at the University of Plymouth research teams have found that adding a layer of film to the implant post can make a huge difference.

This coating is made of a combination of silver, titanium oxide and hydroxyapatite, and it prevents biofilm and infection from forming on the implant post. This means that it eliminates infection from occurring about 95% of the time, and the material actually also promotes a better acceptance of the post into the bone. This could make a huge difference in the industry of dental implants, and reduce the risk for any patients who choose the procedure.
