How to Improve Your Daily Oral Care Routine
Brushing twice daily is vital to keeping your teeth clean, but it is only part of what is needed to maintain your oral health. There are several other factors that should be a part of your daily oral care routine such as flossing, mouthwash, and diet. It is also important to be brushing and flossing correctly for full benefits and to avoid doing more harm to your teeth and gums than good.

- Brushing – It may seem that as long as you are brushing, you are doing enough to keep your teeth clean, but it is also important to be using the correct toothbrush and to be using it correctly. Toothbrushes should fit comfortably in your mouth without being too big or too small. They should also have soft bristles in order to gently brush away plaque and food particles without damaging your gums or enamel. Hold the toothbrush at a forty-five-degree angle towards your gum line so the bristles can remove plaque under the gums. Each time you brush start in a different area to ensure that the entire mouth is being cleaned effectively.
- Flossing – Flossing is just as important to having clean teeth as brushing. Without flossing, you are only cleaning about 70% of the surface area of your teeth. To floss correctly, hold a long piece of floss comfortably between your fingers with one side wrapped around your pointer finger. Gently slide the floss back and forth against your tooth to avoid snapping it between them and harming your gum. Once between two teeth, hold the floss against each tooth in a “C” shape and glide it up the tooth to remove plaque away from the gums.
- Mouthwash – Though not always necessary, mouthwash can be a big help in removing harmful bacteria. It is important when choosing a mouthwash that you purchase one that is low in alcohol as this can actually assist in the erosion of your enamel. Also, get a mouthwash that isn’t too strong to swish for sixty seconds, which is the recommended amount of time needed to kill bacteria.
- Diet – Diet has a huge effect on your oral health. Foods high in sugar and acid can be contributing factors to tooth decay, so it is best to consume these food and drinks in moderation. Drinking plenty of water during the day will also help in removing food particles and bacteria from your mouth between brushing and flossing.
