How to Prepare for Your Visit to the Dentist
At home oral care is important to the health of your teeth and gums, but even those with the most stringent oral care routine still needs to go to the dentist for cleanings. In-office cleanings will give you a deeper clean than just brushing and flossing alone. During your visits, your dentist will also do an exam to make sure you have no dental problems.
Deep clean – Brushing and flossing will get rid of most of the plaque on your teeth, but it cannot get rid of it all. Plaque can hide in those hard to reach places in between your teeth and at the back of your mouth and if left alone too long can turn into tartar, which cannot be removed with brushing and flossing alone. Your dentist will inspect your mouth for those patches of tartar and remove them before they cause problems.
Whiter smile – Having good oral care habits will keep your teeth relatively white, but with that daily cup of coffee in the morning and red wine at night, stains can sink deep into the enamel. Getting regular cleanings will help remove and lift some of the surface stains from your teeth giving you a brighter smile.
Preventative care – Brushing and flossing twice a day is not always enough to keep you from getting cavities and gingivitis. When you make sure to see a dentist at least once a year, they can check for signs of tooth decay and gum disease. If you neglect going to the dentist, these issues could cause irreparable damage to your teeth and gums before you have any symptoms.
Less risk of disease – It has been shown that there is a link between oral health and general health. Dental cleanings can help lower your risk of certain inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Other general health concerns may be detected by your dentist early because they can catch oral symptoms before you see your general physician.
